The Northern Prairie Skink can lose its tail, a process called autotomy, to distract predators attacking it. Some common aspects of the biology of each group are presented here. In the individual species accounts only unique or characteristic aspects are given.
CNN - Scientists have identified a new species of salamander living in murky swamps and marshes of the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama. The green salamander has frilly, fern-like external gills on its head, two front arms, a long eel-like body and no back legs. Biologist Sean Graham, a professor at Sul Ross State University in Texas and the lead author of the paper, said most sirens are kind of "boring-looking," with dull brown or olive green skin that blends in with the mud and muck where they live.
If you purchased your leopard gecko directly from a breeder then they may have already told you what sex your gecko is. Male and female leopard geckos incubate at different temperatures while in their eggs but if you don't know the incubation temperature of your gecko you'll have to look in the right place to know what sex they are. The underside of a leopard gecko holds the secrets to tell what sex they are but in order to see if your gecko is a boy or a girl you'll have to safely pick them up first.

The Long-nosed Leopard Lizard Gambelia wislizenii is a relatively large predatory lizard, found primarily in desert plains characterized by sagebrush, creosotebush, and other low scattered vegetation within the mile circle centered at Tucson. The lizard is active during the warm periods of the day with most activity occurring during the morning hours in the summer months. During early spring mornings, the lizards can be observed basking on rocks and other objects above the ground surface.
The salamander family Sirenidae is represented by four extant species that are restricted to North America. In this study we use morphological and genetic evidence to describe a previously unrecognized species from southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle. We name this species the Reticulated Siren, Siren reticulata.
University of Guelph researchers have discovered the type of stem cell allowing geckos to create new brain cells, providing evidence that the lizards may also be able to regenerate parts of the brain after injury. This finding could help in replacing human brain cells lost or damaged due to injury, aging or disease. Published in Scientific Reportsthis study is the first to provide evidence of new neuron formation -- and the presence of stem cells -- in the leopard gecko brain.
It is possible to breed this Chinese fire-bellied newts, though it seldom has been done. The tissues at the sides of the vent cloaca greatly swell in males as special glands needed for breeding develop. In female newts the sides of the vent do not become swollen. Males usually have higher tail fins than females and exhibit an iridescent, pale blue wash on the sides of the tail that is absent in females.
