It is difficult to pinpoint with certainty the origin of this practice due to the lack of records. The result is a fascinating series of portraits of some of the last remaining protagonists of this centuries-old custom. Likewise, under the Kanun, women are not allowed to smoke, drink, drive or wear a watch. If a woman wishes to be granted all the rights and privileges of the male population, she must effectively become a man, cropping her hair, wearing male clothes and adopting masculine gestures.
Peters is currently working on a documentary film on the subject. Male gestures and swaggers were practiced until they became second nature. Most importantly of all, she took a vow of celibacy to remain chaste for life.

In Northern Albania, in the Cursed Mountainssaid to have been created by the devil himself, to this day the tradition of the sworn virgins is still alive, the last man-women of Europe. Adult women may swear this oath to take the place of the deceased father or brother. But even newborn girls can be declared sons and raised as boys for the purpose of providing the family with a male heir.

Under the Kanunwomen are stripped of many rights.
